The Asbury Park Press reports 44-year-old Jesus Soriano-Marroquin was alone and wearing a seat belt when he slammed into a utility pole near Ocean County Park shortly after 3 a.m., critically injuring himself.

Authorities initially charged Soriano-Marroguin with driving while intoxicated, having a suspended license and reckless driving. He was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he died at 11:40 a.m. police said.

The impact of the crash snapped a Verizon utility pole on the westbound side of Route 88, forcing a closure of the roadway until about 8 a.m.
