A Toms River man is hospitalized in critical condition, after being struck while bicycling in Lacey Sunday morning, according to police.

Authorities said the unidentified 44-year-old man was biking on West Lacey Road when he veered into traffic near Aspend Road to pick up an item he dropped and was struck by a motorist shortly before 10:30 a.m., according to the Asbury Park Press.

The man was thrown from the bicycle. He was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

The roadway was closed for several hours.
