We know how hot it gets in cars and the summertime here in New Jersey. Think how hot it's been the last few days. It was crazy hot.

Summer in New Jersey means hot beaches, cold treats and over-heated cars. I had my puppy at the vet yesterday and we had to wait in the car just a little when we got there, I had to keep the air conditioning on.

It might seem harmless to leave a few things behind while you run errands or hit the boardwalk, but those triple-digit temperatures inside your vehicle can do serious damage.

Even if it's 80°F outside, the interior of your car can reach over 120°F in just minutes. WOW, that's hot. That kind of heat can turn your car into an oven and not just for your stuff. These 5 things you should never leave in a hot car on a sizzling New Jersey day.

Kids and Pets in Hot Cars: A Deadly Mistake You Must Avoid

#1 - Kids and pets – Never, ever leave them unattended, not even for a minute. It’s deadly. I know it's something that we say, well "duh", but it happens. Every summer we hear a horrible story about a child or pet left in a hot car.

#2 - Electronics – Phones, tablets, and laptops can overheat and become permanently damaged. Did you ever see your iPhone or Android get so hot? It's wild because it doesn't take long for one of these to heat up to the point of not working.

Dangers of Aerosol Cans in Hot Vehicles: Risk of Explosions

#3 - Aerosol cans – Aerosol cans can explode. Please take them out of your hot car. It's something you might not even think about. It might be in your bag for later, but it happens.

#4 - Bottled water – Heat can cause plastic to leach chemicals into your drink. Oh my goodness, I do all the time, then drink it. GROSS! I have to remember to bring in all my bottles of water and NEVER drink them if they were hot.

#5 - Groceries or medication – Anything perishable loses its effectiveness or spoils fast. We all know ice cream will melt or we think of milk, it can spoil fast in the heat. And, don't forget about your medications.

Aside from the damage, some melted items can even destroy your interior. Ever cleaned up a melted crayon or lip balm from leather seats? Don’t.

Treat your car like a greenhouse in summer, because it basically is. Always double-check before locking up. Your health, your belongings, and your peace of mind are worth it.
