In 1882, Hastings Square, which is between First and Second Avenues in Spring Lake, has a bunch of cottages on it, according to the Essex and Sussex website.  One of the cottages was named Essex and another was named Sussex.

A fire in 1900 destroyed several buildings including the Essex Cottage. Fourteen years after the fire the Hastings Square property was sold to the Hastings Suare Hotel Company.

One hundred eight years ago, in 1914 the Essex and Sussex Hotel was opened and could accommodate up to 400 guests, and the legend began.
