NEWARK — Police arrested a 19-year-old woman on animal cruelty charges after she was allegedly seen on social media tossing a cat from a third-floor balcony.

According to Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose, detectives were notified about the social media video, which they said shows Tikeemah J. Lassiter of Clinton throwing the cat from a balcony on the 300-block of South Orange Avenue in Newark on Dec. 1. The cat landed on the sidewalk below.

Police say the woman was visiting relatives at the time of the incident. She was arrested Saturday and charged with animal cruelty.

According to NJ.com, the video shows a woman allegedly throwing the cat off a balcony and also captures laughter as the cat is hurled to the ground.

Ambrose said the cat survived the incident and is in the custody of the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Authorities say veterinarians will examine the animal and determine where it should be placed. No additional information on the cat's condition or any injuries was provided.

In addition to the animal cruelty charges, a warrant for $10,000 was also issued by NJ Transit Police for Lassiter's arrest  in connection with an alleged assault.
