New Jersey U.S. Senator Bob Menendez meets with Superstorm Sandy victims today in a press conference to outline new measures aimed at cleaning up the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Menendez said he's gotten assurances from FEMA Deputy Associate Administrator Brad Kieserman that they will collect and make available to every policy holder all alterations of engineering reports.

"That's important because that will tell us the breadth and scope of this and give the policy holder the ability to make their case," said Menendez.

He's also formed a task force to institute the practice of peer reviewing inspection reports, overseeing insurance companies and the claims appeal process. He explained that the goal is to make sure flood insurance claims are dealt with legitimately and not biased against claimants.

Menendez said another goal is in, "making sure that not just those who file lawsuits but those who had fraud committed against them will have an opportunity to have their case reviewed."

In his press release, Menendez said Kieserman has "committed to fundamentally reform the claims process so these egregious bad practices are never again repeated." In doing so Kieserman has made a commitment to work to sanction and expel from the NFIP any engineering firm or private insurance company found to have participated in the fraud.

The press conference takes place at the Senator's Newark office at 11:30 a.m.
