"Call Before You Dig", or just dialing 811 on the phone will bring you to professionals in the industry to help you decipher where you are allowed to dig on your property so as to not disturb underground pipes or wires.

“We urge all of our customers to call the 811 number at least three business days before the start of a project, even if it involves planting a shrub or installing a backyard patio,” said Jim Mastrokalos, Director of Operations in a press release. “Ensuring public safety, protecting the environment, and preventing service interruptions of underground utility infrastructures are extremely vital elements within our communities,” he added.

With the recent outbreaks of lead in the water being found in Flint, Michigan and more closely in Newark, New Jersey, it is being stressed that before you dig and find out what's underneath your yard do your homework and call 811.

For ways on preventing or treating lead from entering your drinking water, Jane Kunka, a spokeswoman from Suez provided some tips recently on how to go about doing so.

Suez and CGA have partnered up for the sixth year in a row to support the cause of awareness to your property, your neighbors property and of course everyone's safety in this "National Safe Digging Month.

“Digging without knowing the approximate location of underground utilities increases the likelihood of unintentional rupture, which can cause not only serious injuries, but trigger major service disruptions which can add up to significant restoration costs,” Bob Kipp, President of CGA said in a press release.
