Sherman Hemsley, best known for playing George Jefferson on “The Jeffersons’ has died at the age of 74.

Hemsley died at his home in El Paso, Texas apparently from natural causes police tell TMZ. His nurse discovered him but at first thought he was sleeping.

The Philadelphia native’s  more recent appearances were “I Get That Alot,” “The Hughley’s” and “Family Guy.”

He was in VH1′s “The Surreal Life” reality series in 2006 with Alexis Arquette, Poison guitarist C. C. DeVille, Steve Harwell, Maven Huffman, Tawny Kitaen, Andrea Lowell and  Florence Henderson.

Hemsley played Deacon Ernest Frye on the NBC series Amen for several seasons. Co-star Marla Gibbs and Hemsley reenacted a scene from Amen during his season of The Surreal Life.

He also teamed up with his former co-star Isabel Sanford in commercials for The Gap, Old Navy and Denny’s

He had no wife or children.
