Selecting a Scholarship Winner
If you listen to 92.7 WOBM with any regularity (and you should) you have likely heard a WOBM/Gateway Toyota Student of the Week tribute.
They air each Monday during the school year and highlight the accomplishments of an Ocean County High School senior chosen by his or her school. Usually the students are selected for their academic achievements along with involvement in school and community organizations along with athletics, music and more.
Our first student of the week for the current school year was Madison Demand of Central Regional back on September 12th and the 38th honoree was Mark Baker of the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science or MATES just this past Monday. In between 36 others were featured each Monday on 92.7 WOBM and on wobm.com where you can read about their accomplishments.
Each of the 18 county high schools along with the Ocean County Vocational-Technical School are part of the program which I initiated 21 years ago.
When we launched the program in 1996 Gateway Toyota of Toms River signed on as the exclusive sponsor and while much has changed over more than two decades the auto dealership on Route 37 East remains committed to this program which highlights the very best in our high schools today.
The honored students receive a framed certificate from us and become eligible for the $1,000 WOBM/Gateway Toyota Student of the Week scholarship. That was chosen through a random drawing of all 38 weekly honorees this morning with Gateway Toyota General Manager Rick Cardwell live on the air.
The name picked was Joseph Elmo of Toms River High School North, a high honor roll student who is a member of the National Honor Society, TEAM, Captain’s Crew, Wind Ensemble, Jazz/Concert Bands (saxophone) and Drum Major of the Marching Mariners.
Joseph will major in music education and will receive his scholarship award during a presentation at Gateway Toyota later this month.
