Little Egg Harbor resident and Rowan University student Matthew Uhl is dead after being struck by a car outside of his fraternity house early Friday morning.

According to Glassboro Police, officers were dispatched for an alleged report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle on April 12 just after midnight. When they arrived on the scene, Uhl was unconscious and unresponsive.

The vehicle involved in the crash, as well as driver Derrick D. Gillam, of Bridgeport, CT, were still at the scene when authorities arrived.

Uhl was treated by Gloucester County EMS and Underwood-Memorial Hospital MICU before being transported to Cooper Hospital in Camden, NJ, where he was listed as being in critical condition with a serious brain injury. He was pronounced dead hours later due to massive head trauma as a result of the crash.

At the scene, Gillam allegedly had an odor of alcohol on his breath and an open bottle of vodka on the floor of the back seat of his car. He refused to cooperate with a DWI investigation after being taken to Glassboro Police headquarters and was charged with obstruction of justice. Authorities took Gillam to Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Washington Township for a mandatory blood specimen withdrawal before transporting him to Gloucester County Jail where a full cash bail was set at $25,000.

Glassboro Police is investigating the accident. Several witnesses were interviewed; it is believed there was another passenger in Gillam's car at the time of the crash.

Once toxicology results are received complaints will be filed.

Anyone with information regarding the unknown passenger is being asked to contact to Glassboro Police at 856-881-1500.
