The Toms River community is reflecting on the life and influence of Dr. Jon H. Larson, a highly respected leader in local higher education. Serving as OCC’s president from August 2000 until June 2023, Dr. Larson became the longest-serving president in the school’s history. Although his title of “Dr.” stemmed from academic accomplishments rather than a medical degree, his impact on the college and its students was substantial. His commitment to OCC is commemorated on campus with the Jon and Judith Larson Student Center, honoring both him and his wife for their contributions.

Dr. Larson lived in Toms River for 26 years and brought a wealth of experience from community college leadership roles across several states. Before his career in higher education, he served his country in the 1960s as a platoon leader and company commander in the U.S. Army’s 63rd Armored Battalion within the 1st Infantry Division.

His passing marks the close of an important chapter for Ocean County College and the wider Toms River community, leaving behind a legacy built on dedication, service, and a lifelong commitment to education.

Visitation will take place on November 21 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, located at 703 Main Street in Toms River. A private burial and interment will follow.

I personally remember many occasions working with Dr. Larsen and participating in events at Ocean County College. He was always there with a smile and distinguished leadership that was a trademark of his time at the school. He brought many changes, upgrades, and additions to the campus, and his legacy will live on at the school, which is one of the finest 2-year colleges in America. My thoughts and prayers are extended to his family at this time.
