A pit bull attacked a Little Egg Harbor Police Officer as the department investigated an "active disturbance" at a Mystic Islands home on Friday.

This residence is well known to police, who sent several officers to the home.

As officers arrived on scene to begin an investigation, a pit bull ran out and attacked an officer.

The dog let go of that officer and tried attacking another officer resulting in the discharge of a firearm.

The officer who was attacked was transported to the Southern Ocean County Hospital where he was treated for a puncture wound and later released.

The dog was not injured during this incident and was transported by animal control to the Ocean County Animal Shelter where the dog is currently being held.
