We've been keeping an eye on the saga of Pier 1 Imports since last fall when the home decor chain first announced a couple dozen closures.

Just last month, the previous estimate of 70 store closings jumped more than sixfold, with an announcement that up to 450 stores will be closing.

The story took another turn this week with news of an official chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.

According to reports, the 450 number includes all of Pier 1's Canadian locations.

While the hundreds of closing stores are in the process of running going out of business sales, company officials are said to be hoping for a buyer to come forward to potentially keep the chain's remaining stores open.

According to NJ.com, 16 Pier 1 stores remain in operation as of this writing, including:

  • Bridgewater
  • Clifton
  • Deptford
  • Freehold
  • Hamilton
  • Holmdel
  • Jersey City
  • Manahawkin
  • Manasquan
  • Mount Laurel
  • Paramus
  • Riverdale
  • Rockaway
  • Somers Point
  • Toms River
  • Watchung

USAToday reports that the following New Jersey Pier 1 stores have closed or are slated to do so:

  • Cape May Court House
  • Cherry Hill
  • East Brunswick
  • East Hanover
  • Edgewater
  • Flanders
  • Flemington
  • Howell
  • Millville
