Pedestrian critical after car accident in downtown Toms River, NJ Wednesday
If you saw a flurry of police activity in downtown Toms River this afternoon, it was due to an accident involving a pedestrian around 1:15 pm.
Toms River Police said that a woman was crossing Hooper Avenue near the intersection at Washington Street -- outside of the crosswalk -- when she was hit by a vehicle turning left from Washington Street with a green arrow.
Witnesses told police that the woman was crossing against the "Do Not Cross" signal at the traffic light with an umbrella over her head, which police said may have obstructed her view of turning vehicles.
Following police arrival, EMS units arrived and began working on the pedestrian who sustained head trauma and, was semi-conscious at the time.
She was brought to Jersey Shore University Medical Center and is currently listed in critical condition.
The accident remains under investigation by Toms River Traffic Safety Officer Adam Koeppen.
Toms River Police said that there is no summons being issued at this time.
There were multiple sheriffs officers, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, as well as, the Ocean County Sheriff’s CIU on the scene as well.
