Owner of NJ gas stations owes workers $1.4 million

The owner six gas stations in Burlington, Camden and Mercer counties has agreed to pay $1.47 million to workers he cheated out of wages and overtime.

Manjit Guleria also paid a $8,976 penalty and agreed to implement an electronic timekeeping system.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division said Guleria made his employees work more than 10 hours a day for seven days a week without paying them overtime. He also paid them below minimum wage, officials said.

The settlement agreement calls for Guleria to pay 24 workers a total $735,512 in unpaid wages and $735,512 in damages, coming out to almost 61,300 per worker.

Guleria owns these gas stations:

• Citgo, 400 NJ 38 in Maple Shade
• Citgo, 102 Washington Crossing Road in Pennington
• Citgo, 2006 Mount Holly Road in Burlington
• Citgo, 1510 NJ 38 in Cherry Hill
• Citgo, 469 Lenola Road in Moorestown
• Lukoil, 2225 Admiral Wilson Blvd. in Merchantville

“This settlement puts these wages into the hands of the employees who earned them,” Charlene Rachor, director of the Division’s Southern Jersey District Office, said Friday.
