It's been a bit cold in New Jersey this past week. I hate waking up to 15° weather and having to take my dog outside.

I have been living in UGGs this entire week.

As best as I can, I have been avoiding being outside.

I take the dog out and come back in as quickly as possible. I am speed walking to and from my car when I do have to brave the icy tundra.

We haven't had much snow throughout the state to go along with the cold weather, so I'm assuming your kids aren't begging to play outside right now.

However, when we do get snow and it is very very cold, is there a certain temperature that experts suggest you keep your kids inside?

What temperature is too cold for kids to play outside?

After extensive research, and by extensive research I mean just perusing through the first page of Google results, I was shocked to see there really isn't a general consensus.

I expected to see some sort of medical journal with extensive research on the topic, but that was just not the case.

Using wind chill to determine how long to be outside in the winter

According to A Healthier Michigan, run by Blue Cross Blue Shield:

In general, when the wind chill is 32 degrees and above, it’s safe to be outside. In temperatures 13 degrees to 31 degrees, indoor breaks should happen every 20-30 minutes. For wind-chills of 13 degrees and below, you should move activities indoors and outside of the cold as frostbite can set in very quickly.

Now, not everyone agrees with this.

Temperature guide for outside play for kids in the winter

Boys Town Pediatrics uses a three-color guide for parents to use to determine whether or not it is safe for their kids to play outside.

  • Green: 30° or higher is generally safe to play with occasional breaks and appropriate layers of clothes.
  • Yellow: 20°-30° it's best to be more cautious. Still follow the green guidelines, but maybe include more breaks for warming up.
  • Red: 20° or Below: Stay inside
