The Ocean County Freeholder Board gave final approval Wednesday to an acquisition deal with Toms River to contribute $1.9 million-dollars toward the $4.2 million-dollar purchase of the former Camp Albocondo property off Route 571.

Freeholder John Bartlett called the agreement an "impressive purchase of land," noting the 53 acre tract was the only part of the River Corridor the County didn't control.

Bartlett also pointed out "the appraisal is more than the $1.9 million dollars" the County is contributing.

The former Albocondo property is located in the Barnagat Bay Watershed and Bartlett said it's environmental importance and quality are beyond question.

The property is being purchased from the Trust for Public Land. A previous plan by former Toms River Schools Superintendent Michael Ritacco and the Toms River Board of Education to purchase it to build a school fell through.
