SPRINGFIELD — A 27-year-old township man accused of killing his own mother and grandfather earlier this year is moving closer to trial.

A Union County grand jury this week handed up an indictment against James Brown on charges of first-degree murder and three related weapons offenses.

Roth Brown, 51, and Thomas Brown, 79, were stabbed to death inside their Meckes Street home. Their bodies were found by police June 27 after they went to the house on a wellness check.

Brown was arrested a day later by Mountainside police after they spotted him walking along Route 22.

Brown is being held at the Union County Jail in Elizabeth with bail set at $2 million.
