Let’s be honest, you have to pay attention when you’re on a bike. Wearing a helmet, watching for cars, using lights, and knowing the rules of the road can help keep you safe.

Drivers in the Garden State have a responsibility too. Give cyclists room and keep an eye out for them.

Recently I decided to give my bike a makeover. A new set of reflectors, hand grips, and a new seat. Plus, I painted the bike, and yes, I think it came out very nice, and it feels like I have a new bike without having to buy one.

My bike isn't a fancy one; it's basically a "beach cruiser" with no gears and simple foot brakes.

I have been enjoying riding around the neighborhood, but I didn't realize I was breaking the law every time I ride my bike!

Did You Know It's Illegal To Ride A Bicycle In New Jersey Without A Bell?

Yes, that's right! I just found this out! So I have been riding around and breaking the law! I do not have a bell. According to NJ.gov:

39:4-11 Audible Signal:
A bicycle must be equipped with a bell or other audible device that can be heard at least 100 feet away, but not a siren or whistle.

So I do need to get a bell for my bike so I am not riding illegally. I wonder, has anyone received a ticket or even a warning for NOT having a bell? Let us know.
