When it comes to snow, New Jersey can be pretty unpredictable. One winter we’re barely shoveling, and the next one we’re wondering where we’re going to put all the snow!

On average, New Jersey gets somewhere around 15 to 50 inches of snow a year, depending on where you live.

Southern New Jersey and the Shore usually see less, while North Jersey, especially the higher elevations, can get quite a bit more.

And that’s the thing about Jersey weather, averages don’t always tell the whole story. We can go from a winter with hardly any snow to one big storm that seems to shut everything down.

Most of us have probably had at least one winter where we thought, “Okay, that’s enough already!”

I think, for us here at the Jersey Shore, the thing we love during the summer, the ocean, is the thing "snow lovers" hate in the winter.

The warm ocean waters in the winter are often what makes "snow maker" storms turn to rain here at the Shore, so it's a give and take if you live along the Jersey coast.

What Is The Early Forecast For Winter Here In New Jersey?

According to early reports, My Wild: "More storms, marginal cold: expect an active winter where the rain/snow line decides everything. Elevation and the interior are the safer snow bets; valley and coastal totals often finish below normal in this combination."

So, to me, it appears it will be the usual scenario here in New Jersey when it comes to winter weather. The closer to the coast, the less snow; further inland, more snow.

When cold air gets into the state, everywhere, that's when we will see a big snow here in New Jersey.

On average the first snopw usually comes around December 15th. The average snowfall in Newark, New Jersey is 29 inches. The average low temp for Jersey is 27* during January. Our risk of ice storms is MODERATE.
