There's good news and there's bad news. The good news is New Jersey is not the smelliest state in the nation. The bad news is we're pretty close.

There is no question that New Jersey always seems to be the punchline in any smelly state joke, and the laziest of comedians use them all the time.

The jokes aren't funny or creative. They're obvious and lame and they rarely even induce a chuckle from any sober audience. And the worst part is they're not even true.

Scientific research has proven that New Jersey is not the smelliest state in the nation. But before you think the smelly jokes are behind us forever, we should let you know that the same study that found us to not be the smelliest state, did put us in the smelly top 10.

The study was done last year and reported at Zippia, and while New Jersey does not occupy the #1 spot, it is firmly set at #7. Not exactly Disney World for the nose.

Part of the problem could be we apparently don't shower in New Jersey as often as people in other states across the nation.

Then there's pollution, all the factories, and all the garlic being used at our 5000 pizzerias, the last of which is completely forgivable. But at the end of the day, we don't stand a chance.

I say we celebrate the fact that we're not the smelliest, and leave that #7 ranking thing as a fight for another day. Let's get away from our stinky reputation one day at a time. Baby steps, right?
