It would be safe to say that New Jersey residents think they are smart, and we probably also think we live in a pretty smart state. Not so fast.

When the experts put the "smartest states" numbers together., there was some good news and some bad news for residents of the Garden State.

Before we get to that, let's go over the place where New Jersey's inflated belief in self-smartness is most often on display.

Where does every New Jersey resident feel like they know all the answers? Where do we always think we're right? You got it, it's on our roadways.

We know that there is no direct correlation between IQ and driving skills, but our actions on the roadways go a long way to explaining who we are.

How is it that each and every one of us think we are right and everyone else is wrong on our roadways? If we're all thinking that, then that can't be, right? It doesn't add up. This must be hurting our IQ somehow.

Regardless of the roads, New Jersey actually maintains a pretty high IQ. The good news we mentioned earlier is that we are above average when it comes to IQ. New Jersey's average IQ sits at 101 according to World Population Review.

Now, here's the bad news. Our average IQ in the Garden State doesn't get us into the top 5 in America. It doesn't even make the top 10.

It turns out our barely triple-digit IQ places us at #16 in the nation. That's not bad, but it's not as smart as we thought we were. Especially when we're cruising along in the left lane, better known as our happy place.
