USPS Urges New Jerseyans to Check Their Mailbox
The United States Postal Service reminds you to check your mailbox for security reasons and to make sure your mail gets to you safely.
The USPS is encouraging customers to maintain and upgrade their mailboxes for efficient mail delivery.
Every year, did you know there was a "check your mailbox" week? There is specific week in America where the United States Post office ensures we are checking our mailbox and making sure it is being maintained.
Why is it important for New Jerseyans to maintain their mailboxes?
From Acting Postmaster and CEO Doug Tulino, “Customer’s mailboxes are the first point of contact for receiving birthday cards, letters, and important documents. A well-maintained mailbox helps to ensure that every package and parcel makes it to its intended destination safely and efficiently.”
When is National Mailbox Awareness week in New Jersey?
Mailbox awareness week is May 18th - May 24th, 2025.
If you're wondering how to care for your mailbox, I'm not kidding either, the USPS gives us tips to make sure your mailbox is maintained:
- Replacing loose hinges on a mailbox door.
- Repainting a mailbox that may have rusted or has started to peel.
- Remounting a loosened mailbox post.
- Replacing or adding house numbers.
We did just replace the mailbox post. It was leaning. I was talking to my mailman the other day and he said, sometimes it's hard to read the numbers on the mailbox because they're so old. We just think, it's our mailman, we see him or her everyday. But, he said I'd be surprised when someone is filling in and they have trouble if they can't read the numbers on the mailbox. I never thought of that.
I had no idea we could do this, but for safety, according to about.usps.com, "With Informed Delivery, customers can see photos of their mail before it arrives and receive notifications when it’s delivered." Check with your local post office or USPS.com.
