The cause of an accident that closed down the southbound exit of 82 on the Garden State Parkway Tuesday night was the result of a New Hampshire man driving behind the influence and crashing into another vehicle.

Toms River Police said Avery Murch, 25, of Weare, New Hampshire and Thomas Holl, 32, of Toms River were both heading south on the GSP around 4:00 pm when Holl entered the right lane heading towards Exit 82 as Murch tried getting into the same lane.

Murch then sideswiped Holl's vehicle, police said, and continued toward the exit ramp.

When he reached Route 37 W eastbound, Murch exited the road, struck a curb, then kept on going, hit a street sign and a utility pole.

He then tried to change directions and head east but drove into a cement wall under the parkway overpass, disabling his vehicle.

Toms River Police said Murch was showing signs of impairment and was then arrested and charged with DWI while his vehicle was impounded, due to John’s Law.

He was charged with Driving Under the Influence, Reckless Driving, Revoked Driver’s License, Failure to Report an Accident, Leaving the Scene of Property Damage, and Operating with Drugs in the Vehicle.

The accident is being investigated by Toms River Traffic Safety Officer Robert Westfall.
