Dear jelly donuts,

I love you.  And I know millions of other people love you too.  I'm writing this letter on National Donut Day because there are going to be a LOT of donuts given away and purchased today.

I'm glad there's a day to celebrate our love of donuts!   But I'm seeing a trend that I'm not too happy about.  People are getting away from classic sweets like jelly donuts and they are choosing fancy "custom" donuts instead.  With much love and respect to our Toms River neighbor Uncle Dood's which offers great combos of yummy icings and toppings on their donuts...I prefer going old school.  If given a choice of a donut with trendy toppings or a classic greasy donut with jelly on the inside, I'm taking the filled jelly donut.

I have fond memories of going to the Kopps bakery in Queens when I was a kid.  Mom would always let me get one of their delicious jelly donuts.  And on the days when I wasn't running errands with her, I would excitedly open the box she brought home.  (Remember how bakeries used to tie up the boxes with that string?)

My love for you jelly donuts intensified when I moved out to San Diego.  It was a classic case of craving what you can't have.  For some reason there were no Dunkin' Donuts in that part of California.  Some family and friends who flew out to visit knew they would delight me with some jellies from back East.

A Jersey Shore Dunkin' Donuts and WOBM made a dream come true years ago when they let me go behind the scenes of the shop and actually use the gadget that shoots jelly into the donuts.  What fun it was to actually make my own!

So now, although tastes and trends have changed, I just want you jelly donuts to know that I will always love you and will never leave you.  Thank you for all the many years of joy you've given me.

Happy National Donut Day!

(Okay Listeners and Readers, let's hear from YOU.  Are you a fan of donuts with fancy toppings?  Or do you prefer a donut with a good filling?)
