Multi-Alarm Fire At Woodbridge Apartment Complex
A 9-alarm fire at the Woodbridge Village Apartments has left dozens of residents homeless.
Many of the residents were put up at a hotel after the fire destroyed 2 buildings with 24 units each in the Avanel section of Woodbridge.
The owner of the building tells WABC TV he believes he has enough vacancies in other buildings to provide new homes for the residents.
Many said they were alerted to the blaze by neighbors who banged on their doors.
Police tell the Patch of Woodbridge that ammunition in a gun cabinet was set off by the fire and caused flames to shoot through the roof. Several ladders were used to pour water on the front and sides and tanker trucks were brought in to supply additional water for the hoses.
Walls were being knocked down in order to find hidden hot spots. Firefighters say this was one of the hardest fires they have ever fought.
50 firefighters from Woodbridge, Carteret & Avanel fire departments fought the blaze.
The Avenel Middle School across the street from Woodbridge Village served as a Red Cross shelter.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
