New Jersey Governor’s Bold Plan: Stop State Funds from Going to Federal Taxes
In some of the latest news out of Trenton this weekend, New Jersey’s governor-elect, Mikie Sherrill, is suggesting that the state might hold back the federal tax money it usually sends as a way to push back against the Trump administration.

According to reports, Sherrill, speaking with John Stewart on his podcast, said that she thinks about withholding federal tax dollars “all the time” and that it’s a “great idea.”
According to Politico, Sherrill said, “If they're not gonna run the programs, then what are we paying them for?” she added. “It's like, you know, you're paying us for a service and they’re not delivering. So let’s stop paying for it."
What Is An Obstacle For Governor-elect Sherrill to Stop Funds From Going to Federal Taxes?
One significant obstacle: individuals and businesses, rather than states, pay federal income taxes. This is a quick response from those who object to Sherrill's suggestion of snubbing Washington.
According to Politico, "Federal funding cuts featured prominently in New Jersey’s gubernatorial race. During the federal government shutdown, Trump threatened to 'terminate' funding for the Gateway tunnel — a massive infrastructure project to build new train tunnels under the Hudson River."

It's not quite clear how Governor-elect Sherrill could hold back Federal Tax payments, and those against the idea say she won't be able to. Similar proposals (like in California) have run into serious legal and logistical hurdles.
Those who support the idea say "politically, it's a way for her to signal strong resistance to federal tax policy and to press for more favorable treatment for New Jersey."
People are eager to see what is in store for New Jersey with a new administration about to take over. Obviously, some are excited while others are bracing for what they feel will be failure.
