Kevin Jennings, 64, of the township's Whiting section, was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries, but investigators believe that a medical emergency triggered the crash.

Officers were summoned at about 7:20 AM to Route 70 in Whiting, near mile marker 42.5. They found Jennings, trapped in his black Chevrolet Cobalt. Firefighters pulled him from the car.

Investigators surmised that Jennings's car careened off eastbound Route 70, hit a tree, rebounded off it, and turned onto its passenger side as it became wedged against a second tree.

Police offered no details regarding speed, road and lighting conditions, traffic volume, or the availability of witnesses. Patrolman Ian Bole is conducting followup investigaitons.

The road was partially closed for several hours. Whiting and Lakehurst volunteer firefighters, Quality Medical Transport EMTs, and MONOC paramedics assisted.
