This is one landmark many here in New Jersey have visited, but if you haven't then this is one you do not want to miss. Lucy the Elephant is known around the world as one of the most unique "apartments" you may ever come across. Yes, inside the giant elephant was an apartment and people stayed inside the elephant during a visit to the beach here at the Jersey Shore. According to Wikipedia "Lucy the Elephant is a six-story elephant-shaped example of novelty architecture, constructed of wood and tin sheeting in 1881 by James V. Lafferty in Margate City, New Jersey, approximately five miles south of Atlantic City."

According to a recent Love Exploring article, Lucy the Elephant is among the most important landmarks in America. "Tipped as the oldest roadside attraction in America, beloved Lucy the Elephant began life as a fun amusement designed to entice people to the area. Fast-forward more than a century and Lucy is still standing and she's earned a deserving place on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can come along for guided tours and a quick browse of the dinky gift shop."
