No crosswalks exist, and the lighting is low, where a Lakewood woman died attempting to cross a busy street Tuesday night, according to updated details from the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

Irene Perosi, 53,. was found unresponsive on Shorrock Road, near Route 70, when police arrived at 5:01 PM, authorities said.

James W. Howell, 66, of Toms River was southbound on Shorrock, in a 2010 Mazda CX-9. Authorities said that Howell stopped his car in the right lane and placed the 911 call that summoned police.

Howell told Lakewood police that Perosi was crossing the street in the middle of the block. Ocean County investigators confirmed that she was in a travel lane at the time of impact. Life-saving measures failed.

Howell also consented to a blood draw, a search of his vehicle and a search of his phone. The results of the searches and the toxicology test have not been issued, and no indication has been given of Howell's speed, or the speed and volume of traffic at the time.

No charges have been filed. The investigation remains in progress.

Witnesses are asked to call Lakewood Police Officer Alex Guzman at 732-363-0200.
