A Jersey Pizza Secret That’s Too Good to Stay Quiet
I came across this topic when reading an article recently reissued by The Digest (New Jersey) that discussed a style of cooking (pizza) that's a hidden Jersey secret that everyone should try.

What Is Tomato Pie?
The style we are talking about is the "Trenton Tomato Pie." According to Peter Candia, Trenton Tomato Pie is "round, thin-and-crisp dough is sprinkled with cheese and toppings first before being splattered with the highest quality crushed tomatoes."
One thing this style features that no one else has except here in the Garden State is the famous "Jersey Tomato". In my humble opinion, "IMHO," it's not a Jersey tomato pie without homegrown Jersey tomatoes. I'm sure this is up for debate, but I love the hometown fav.
Where is Jersey's Best Tomato Pies?
The "Trenton" style tomato pie goes back to two popular spots that have a long history.
- Papa’s Tomato Pies opened in 1912; this was the start of the legendary story of the "Trenton tomato pie" as we know it today.
- Another popular spot for tomato pie is De Lorenzo’s Tomato Pies on Hudson Street in Trenton, which opened in 1947.
- Maruca's Tomato Pies is an iconic Jersey Shore spot (Established 1950) with several locations in Asbury Park and Seaside Heights.
- Joe Dianos Tomato Pies in Point Pleasant
- Tuccillo's Tomato Pies in Little Egg Harbor
- Tomato Pies Italian Kitchen in Monroe Township
So maybe the next time you feel like pizza, try a truly unique Jersey "gem", the Tomato Pie. Give us your review.
On a personal note, my wife, April, who grows her own Jersey tomatoes in her garden, makes a tomato pie that is a true "pie," with a regular pie crust, her own homemade sauce, and her homegrown Jersey tomatoes. This tomato pie is delicious and is my favorite!
