Police speculate that the student stepped into Brewers Bridge Road before the bus activated its flashing red signals and slowed to a halt, as a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix bore down.

Officers responed at about 6:52 AM to the intersection of Brewers Bridge Road and Buckingham Drive. Police said that the driver, from Lakehurst, stayed at the spot and cooperated with investigators.

The teen was given precautionary hospital care. Police did not disclose which of Jackson's two high schools he attends, nor did they identify the 57-year-old driver.

No information was given regarding road, lighting and visibility conditions at that hour, about 20 minutes before sunrise amid leftover showers and drizzle of the departing nor'easter.

Traffic Safety Officers Trevor Crowley and Brad Reider are in charge of followup investigations of the incident.
