South Jersey Power Fully Restored After Blizzard, Atlantic City Electric Says
- Atlantic City Electric says power has been fully restored across South Jersey after the blizzard
Officials with Atlantic City Electric say power to all of its customers across South Jersey has been restored following last Sunday and Monday's blizzard.
Storm Brought Massive Outages
The storm, which brought around 18" of heavy, wet snow to the region and wind gusts over 60 MPH, brought down trees and power lines, knocking out power to over 130,000 of its customers.
The last winter storm of this magnitude, with a comparable number of outages, occurred in 2011, making this the most significant winter storm the region has experienced in about 15 years.
To restore service, the utility had 1,600 field personnel working around the clock to repair damage. Crews from as far away as Michigan and Kentucky were in South Jersey to assist.
Tyler Anthony, president and CEO of Atlantic City Electric's parent company, Pepco Holdings, said in a statement, "Power outages, particularly in winter, can be incredibly challenging for our customers and communities we serve, and we are grateful for their patience as our teams worked safely and as quickly as possible to restore service."
Technology Helped Speed Recovery
ACE said its recent rollout of smart meters enabled it to detect problems faster and deploy field resources more effectively. During this storm, this technology helped prevent the unnecessary dispatch of approximately 1,200 crews.
Looking Ahead
And some good news: there is no snow in the forecast for the foreseeable future. After a chilly start to the week with highs in the 30s on Monday, South Jersey could see temperatures around 60 by this coming Friday. Even better: when clocks change next weekend, the sun will set close to 7:00. That'll set the stage for the first day of spring on March 21st.
