Say It Ain’t So: Mays Landing’s Sugar Hill Subs Shuts Doors
News of this social media message must have put a lot of people in a panic.
Sugar Hill Subs had to close. What?! Say it ain't so?
Okay, It's really isn't true. Let's just say Mays Landing's famed Sugar Hill Subs is taking a short break after some pipes broke.
Burst Pipes Cause the Closing of Sugar Hill Subs
Sugar Hill Subs & Deli, at 5445 Somers Point Road, the sandwich pride of Mays Landing -- and an absolute must-try since 1982 -- posted the bad news on Facebook.
Hey y'all. So here's the deal. For the next 3 days sugar hill will be under construction due to the pipe burst. We will be fixing the issue and giving the plumbing a face liftAs unfortunate as this is, it ensures something like this will hopefully not happen again. It's been awhile since we've had a winter this harsh so this was something we were not aware of and also had no idea would happen. That being said, please be patient while we handle this issue. We will be doing our best to ensure we are back in working order as quickly as possible.
Sugar Hill Subs Takes a Back Seat to No Sub Shop
Gerry Delany, who owns Sugar Hill Subs with his wife, Denice, has heard the comparisons to Atlantic City's famous White House Subs more than anybody. He even talks about the sub rivalry on his website.
"We've tried them. My secret to success is quality, quantity and price. Not putting them down. When people come in and say, 'You're better than the White House,' I say, 'The only difference that the White House has over me is that over there, you're going to pay $2 more a sub with half the meat."
Sugar Hill Subs even uses the same Atlantic City bread as white House, and there is no beating Formica bread.
Favorite Sugar Hill Sub Story
I first got into the Sugar Hill Sub habit while traveling out to Mays Ladning to visit my sister and her husband, who lived in town for several years.
Margie and Bob would ask me to stop at Sugar Hill Subs on my way out to see them on Saturdays. If you want to see a jamming sub shop, stop into Sugar Hill Subs on a summer Saturday at lunchtime.
My sister is a fan of Sugar Hill's "Italian Stallion" sub, and so that's what I tried first. Excellent.
Then one Saturday, I was in a cheesesteak mood and tried their Gut Buster Cheesesteak. Oh, mercy! Has there ever been a more appropriately named sandwich? But, so good.
What I started to realize, the more I stopped into Sugar Hill Subs, was that when they ask you what you would like, there is no wrong answer.
All this talk about Sugar Hill Subs makes me want to jump in the car and drive out there right now. Get that plumbing situation fixed, I'm getting hungry!
