If you’ve lived at the Shore long enough, you already know the drill. Every spring, you start thinking about beach days, and right behind that thought comes the reality check: beach badge prices are going up again. It feels like it happens every single year, and honestly, it’s getting harder to shake off, especially when everything else around us is so expensive.

Some towns have bumped their daily and seasonal badge prices just enough to make you do a double-take. Not outrageous on their own, but when you stack them on top of everything else, it starts to feel like a lot. Groceries are up. Gas is up. Property taxes are, well, always up. And now, just getting onto the beach, something that feels like it should be simple, costs more again.

Why Do NJ Residents Still Pay for Beach Access?

If you live here, pay taxes here, and deal with the cost of living here, why are you still paying to sit on your own state’s beaches? It’s a question that comes up every summer on the sand, in line at Wawa, and basically anywhere locals hang out.

I understand the arguments about maintenance, lifeguards, and keeping the beaches clean. And sure, that all matters. Nobody wants a messy shoreline or unsafe conditions. But at the same time, it’s hard not to feel like residents are getting hit twice.

At the end of the day, we still go. We buy the badges and set up our chairs like we always do. Because no matter how much it costs, there’s still nothing like a Jersey Shore beach day. But it would be nice if it didn’t feel like such a splurge just to get your toes in the sand.
