Just a week and a half ago we passed along the request from one of Ocean County's most popular beaches for help with protecting the dunes in a unique way.

Island Beach State Park asked for people to consider donating their live Christmas trees rather than throwing them out.

Well, this past weekend was IBSP's Christmas tree donation day, and suffice to say that it went better than expected.

Officials were hoping for about 200 trees. They got more than 2,000.

In addition to the piles of evergreens, photos on Island Beach State Park's official Facebook page show a line of cars with trees tied to them stretching into the distance.

The next step is to actually spread the trees out across the dunes.

You can help with that, too. Just click here to register for the dune restoration day, this Saturday, January 11th.
