Is New Jersey Facing A “Snow Drought” This Winter?⛄
Will We See Snow In New Jersey This Winter?
Are you a snow lover? I think this question is evenly divided by answers. 50% love the white stuff and 50% hate it. Where do you fall? I think for me I like a good snowstorm or two each winter and that's good for me. When I was younger I wanted snow every day during the winter but now it's not as fun to deal with. I'd like a few
"white Christmas" snows to add to the holiday and it doesn't have to be a blizzard, just a nice white coating.
Currently, we are in the middle of our worst "drought" here in New Jersey in the last 20-plus years. So the rain has been scarce. Will this translate into a snowless winter? A recent article from Best Life examined the subject of "snow drought". Does a very dry autumn translate into a snowless winter?
According to Best Life, snow totals are down here in the Northeast. "New York has failed to reach double digits. They saw 9.8 inches of snowfall, compared to their two-season average of 59.6 inches. Philadelphia’s mild winters have yielded similar results. They got 11.5 inches of snow from 2022 to 2023 versus the typical average of 46.2 inches. Washington D.C. typically accumulates 27.4 inches of snow within two years, but the current average stands at 8.4 inches."
We have had less snow here in New Jersey over the past few winters, the Jersey Shore has seen only a small amount of snow. I have seen, living here all my life, that we go through waves of snow. Some years we get a decent amount and sometimes we go several years without much at all, so right now it's less than more.
Will We See A Snow Drought This Winter?
According to Best Life, "Unfortunately, it looks like we won’t be getting out of a snow drought anytime soon. Based on numerous climate models, researchers forecast that most regions will succumb to snow drought in the future. Specifically, "all snowy regions of the Northern Hemisphere and the Andes" are predicted to have even less snowfall than they do now."
So if you are a snow lover it looks like you need to get a winter hobby to keep you from missing the visits from Old Man Winter. Let's hope we get precipitation to help replenish the reservoirs that have been hurt by the autumn drought. Think of it this way, less snow means less shoveling! Well, that's how I'm looking at it :)
