If You Have Nothing Nice To Say Then Don’t Say Anything

I don’t know the origin but I’m sure at some point we have all been told by a parent or elder, “if you have nothing good to say, don’t say anything at all.” Of course that was before social media which more often than not is simply a forum to say not so nice things about people, places, etc. Anyway while seeking the origin of the quote I came across a list of If You Have Nothing Nice to Say Quotes and below are 7 of them that resonated with me.

1. “Be true to yourself, be kind to others, be honest, don’t say anything if you have nothing nice to say.”
2. “In elementary school, we all say, “if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all”. In high school, we should say, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, shut your mouth.”  So that’s what I’m telling high schools all around the world.
3. I don’t conduct my career for when I’m dead and people say nice things about me. I conduct my career for the here and now, and what excites me, and what interests me.
4. It is an awesome tragedy in this life that, when asking what a person is and they reply doctor or lawyer or engineer, we don’t say, “Well that’s a nice little hobby, but why don’t you take up writing or paining or music.”
5. People often say very, very nice complimentary things. But I think it’s better if you don’t take that too much to heart.
6. If it’s true, does it have to be nice? If you have something true to say, but you don’t say it because you just want to be nice, isn’t that sort of like a lie?
7. Remember to say what you mean, but don’t say it meanly.

Somebody said to me the other day that lately my topics have made them think a bit.  Maybe it’s just a sign of my old age or should I say maturity.
