How to Win a Radio Contest

As a radio personality, one of the questions I get asked the most is, "are there any tricks to winning a prize on the air?". While there might not be a fool proof way to guarantee a win, I can offer you a few tips when it comes to on-air contests:

• Persistence pays off - Keep trying. If you get a busy signal, try again. People do get through, and you never know when a phone line will open up, so don't let the busy signal discourage you.

• Don't hang up - If you do get past the busy signal and you hear the phone ringing, don't hang up! Until you hear one of us answer the phone and tell you that "you're caller 12" or you hear a winner on the air, let the phone ring. You wouldn't believe how many times I've gotten to # 92 and picked up a dead line from someone getting frustrated and hanging up just a few seconds too early.

• Call the number that we give out on the air - Make sure you're calling the right number. Every now and then someone will call our business office or the WOBM newsroom when they hear an on-air contest announced. Sometimes it's a mistake, sometimes they think that it's a sneaky way to get around the busy signal. It's not, the only number you can win a prize at is the one that you hear us give out on the air.

• Be excited - Ok, while this won't help you win, it'll make the winning experience a lot more fun. You wouldn't believe how many times we've heard someone ask, "what did I win?". That can be frustrating because we know there are people who really want the prize. So even if you're not quite sure what it is you're calling in for, have fun with it, you just got something for free!

• Have fun - That's what it's all about! We know it can be frustrating when you get a busy signal and when you've tried multiple times, but we give out prizes just about every day, so your chances are pretty good if you're persistent. I would say that weekly I get a winner who says, "oh my gosh! I've never won anything before!" You know what they say, you can't win if you don't play!
