Halloween Nights at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia Named One Of Best Halloween Adventures In America
Do you love Halloween? Do you look for really cool Halloween adventures and activities to enjoy during the Halloween season? If so, I have a really spooky one for you to enjoy.

In a recent article, Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia was named one of the BEST Halloween attractions in all of America! Making their "Best Of" list.
What Is Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia?
If you have ever been around Philadelphia, you may have seen the huge stone walls of Eastern State Penitentiary. It looks pretty intimidating, and the old prison has a fascinating history that goes back nearly 200 years.

I always feel that jails and prisons have a dark and strange vibe. Anytime you go into an old prison, like when we visited Alcatraz, it just gives you a "haunted" feeling.
Eastern State opened in 1829 and was built around a new idea for dealing with prisoners. Instead of putting inmates together, the Pennsylvania System called for prisoners to spend most of their time alone in individual cells. The idea was that isolation would give them time to think about their crimes and become "penitent."
The prison itself was pretty unique. Architect John Haviland designed the cellblocks like spokes coming out from a central point. Each prisoner had a private cell, and the prison even had individual outdoor exercise yards.

Not everyone liked the idea. Author Charles Dickens visited Eastern State in 1842 and criticized the solitary-confinement system, believing it was cruel.
Over the years, the prison became overcrowded and the original system was eventually abandoned. Eastern State continued operating until 1970, when it officially closed.

For a while, it looked like the old prison might be torn down. Fortunately, preservation efforts saved it.
Today, Eastern State Penitentiary is a historic site and museum where visitors can walk through the old cellblocks and learn about its unusual past.

And being just across the Delaware from New Jersey, it makes for a pretty interesting history trip for Jersey residents.
What Is The Eastern State Penitentiary Halloween Attraction?
According to their website, "Halloween Nights at Eastern State Penitentiary returns Friday, October 2, running select nights through November 7, 2026."
"Celebrating its 35th season, the annual Halloween festival is back with five haunted houses, historic tours and museum experiences, themed bars and lounges, live performances, food and drinks, and more, all within the walls of Eastern State’s historic 11-acre site."

Looks fun to me and full of Halloween stuff to do. May have to take a ride to Philly and check this one out.
