Fatal Lakewood pedestrian accident under investigation
Circumstances surrounding Thursday night's death of a Lakewood resident on a county highway in the township are being traced by detectives, before it is determined whether charges will ensue.
Perets Schinerman, 61, was hit by a Kia Sportage on Route 528, near Hillside Boulevard, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.
Police were notified at about 7:43 PM. The vehicle, driven by Michael Wood Jr., 30, of Lakehurst, was headed eastbound. Schinerman was found "just east" of the crosswalk, and had met impact with the Kia's front end on the passenger side, authorities said.
Schinerman was rushed to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus, and was pronounced dead at 8:11 PM.
Investigators have taken statements, are conducting a forensic review of cell phones recovered on the site, and will await the result of blood samples.
Wood's vehicle was transferred to the Ocean County Sheriff's CSI unit. Detectives plan to obtain a search warrant.
Authorities said that road conditions, lighting conditions, signs and signals will also be reviewed.
