TOMS RIVER - A driver is recovering from head injuries resulting from a crash on Route 37 this morning that impacted his car on both ends and trapped him inside.

Michael Carlo, 32, of Seaside Park, required extrication from his 2015 Toyota Corolla after the rush-hour, three-car chain collision on Route 37 at Coolidge Avenue, according to police, who said that he was hospitalized.

The crash occurred at about 7:10 AM on the westbound side of the highway. Police said that Carlo was stopped in traffic at a red signal behind a 2015 Nissan Rogue, driven by Edward Brick, 32, of Brick Township.

Meanwhile, a 2013 Dodge Caravan driven by Kim Douglas, 34, of Toms River, plowed into the back of Carlo's car, and propelled it forward into Brick's auto, police said.

Toms River Fire Companies 1 and 2, and fire crews from East Dover and Island Heights, responded along with MonOc paramedicts and Silverton Volunteer First-Aiders.

The crash investigation is being conducted by Toms River PD Officer Kenneth Thomas.
