There’s something special about fall at the Jersey Shore and our New Jersey beaches, but we already know that.

The air turns crisp, the crowds thin out, and the beaches take on a calm, golden glow. Summer may steal the spotlight, but autumn is when many locals say the Shore really shines.

And now, as the season changes, more than just people are enjoying the sand and  surf, our four-legged friends are getting their moment, too.

A New Season, A New Beach Experience

Once Labor Day passes, the atmosphere shifts along New Jersey’s coastline. Boardwalks are quieter, parking is easier, and you can hear the waves without competing with radios and beach chatter. The ocean is still warm enough for a walk at the edge of the tide, but cool breezes remind us that winter isn’t far away. It’s the perfect in-between season. It's relaxed and inviting.

For dog owners, it’s also a time of year that opens new possibilities. Many Jersey Shore towns relax their beach rules in the fall, welcoming pups onto stretches of sand that are off-limits during the busy summer months. That means tail wags, sandy paws, and the joy of watching your best friend run free across the shoreline.

Where Dogs Can Play

While each town sets its own rules, plenty of spots along the Shore allow dogs in the off-season. In some places, like parts of Long Branch, Asbury Park, and Island Beach State Park, pups can enjoy the beach year-round with certain restrictions. Others, like Point Pleasant or Belmar, typically welcome dogs back once the summer crowds clear.

For dog parents, it’s a treat to watch their furry companions splash in the surf, chase seagulls (from a distance), or simply roll around in the sand. It’s a reminder that the beach isn’t just ours to love, it’s a playground for them, too.

Why Fall is the Best Time

Aside from fewer crowds and more dog-friendly policies, fall at the Shore has a beauty all its own. Sunsets seem brighter, stretching across the horizon with fiery reds and oranges. Local coffee shops along the boardwalk serve up seasonal flavors like pumpkin and apple, making it easy to grab something warm before your beach walk.

And for dogs, the cooler air means more energy and more play. No scorching sand to burn paws, no intense heat to overheat them, just cool breezes, soft sand, and space to run.

A Shared Love for the Shore

If you’ve ever noticed how your dog reacts at the beach, the way their ears perk up at the crashing waves, the endless sniffing at seashells, the playful zoomies along the shore, you know this: we’re not the only ones who love the Jersey Shore. Our pets love it just as much, maybe even more. I know my dogs love it.

Seaside Heights and Seaside Park do not allowed on the beach at all through the year but on the bay side in Seaside Park, dogs are allowed all year. CLICK HERE for complete list of beaches throughout New Jersey that allow dogs in the fall, thanks to nj.com. And please remember, leashes for your four-legged friends at the beaches in New Jersey are required.
