Brick Schools Propose Strict Cell Phone Rules: Is This the Future for New Jersey?

Brick Township Board of Education's new policy would heavily restrict the use of mobile phones during the school day, including on school buses, according to shorebeat.com. Introduced for a first reading this week, district leaders described the proposal as “innovative” and said it reflects a growing trend in school districts across New Jersey.

The proposed rules would prevent students from using any electronic communication devices while on school property. This includes time spent in before- and after-school programs, during extracurricular activities, and while traveling on school buses.

In addition, the policy places strong limits on recording in private areas, such as restrooms, locker rooms, shower spaces, or any place where someone is changing clothes, in order to protect student and staff privacy.

Parents have begun voicing their opinions on the proposed changes. Some see the benefits in minimizing distractions, promoting in-person interaction, and safeguarding privacy. Others express concern about limiting students’ ability to stay in touch with family during the day, especially for urgent matters.

Cherry Hill, Middletown, and Montclair school districts have all enacted cellphone restriction bans int he past year in New Jersey.
