Toms River Officials will be holding a groundbreaking ceremony for the new 7,000 square-foot Animal Shelter being built on Oak Avenue. It will sit right near the police department. The ceremony takes place at 9:30 a.m.

After years of talking about it, there's finally some action. The facility is a lot bigger than the existing one on Whitesville Road. The original has been short on space for many years and everyone appears to be excited about the new site. The council had awarded a $6.4 million dollar contract to Kelso Construction last month at a meeting.

The new location will have separate sections for dogs and cats. The current facility doesn't have room for kitties, with most being forced to stay in the hallways in cages. The new location will be easier to access and open for visitors and those seeking pets.

It's expected to take about 18 months to complete and also includes renovations to the police headquarters and municipal courtroom facility.
