The U.S. Census Bureau reports that just after 2:29 PM, the nation's population reached 314,159,265, or pi (3.14159265) times 100 million.

Pi is the mathematical constant for the ratio of a circle's circumference (distance around) to its diameter (distance across).

“This is a once in many generations even," said Census Bureau Chief Demographer Howard Hogan, "so go out and celebrate this American pi.”
