A Whole Generation Has Grown Up With These Christmas Commercials
The holiday commercials seem to start earlier and earlier every year, with jingle bells ringing from our televisions almost the second Halloween is over.
While most holiday themed commercials are forgettable, there are two in particular that have endured for decades.
These two commercials have literally endured through a generation.
O Tannenpalm - Corona Beer (1990)
The idea for this article started when I saw Corona's iconic Christmas spot this past weekend. It's instantly recognizable for its simplicity, with just a single camera shot and the lone soundtrack of someone whistling "O Tannenbaum".
I realized that the commercial had been around for a long time, but I was a little shocked at just how long.
This year the spot, titled "O Tannenpalm", celebrates its 28th year on the air.
But, what surprised me even more was the fact that there's a Christmas commercial that's been around even longer.
Christmas Kisses - Hershey's Chocolate (1989)
Beating Corona by a year, the Hershey's Kisses bell choir has been furiously ringing for almost 30 years.
"Christmas Bells" first hit the airwaves in 1989, and has shown up like clockwork every year when the season rolls around ever since.
Think of that, the surely exhausted by now little red and green Kisses have been ringing away since "The Simpsons" first debuted on TV (interestingly, "The Simpsons" debuted on December 17, 1989, you'd have to think that there's a good chance that the Hershey spot played during the first episode of "The Simpsons" somewhere in the country).
Both spots have certainly stuck around for so long because they're truly timeless.
They're just as relevant in 2018 as they were in the late 80s and early 90s.
There really isn't anything about either that calls them out as being from a specific era, so they endure to this day with little to show their age aside from the fact that 4K high definition wasn't even invented yet when they were shot.
Much like a fruitcake, they come back every year to usher in the Christmas season like an old friend.
