The COVID-19 coronavirus shutdowns have taken a toll on so many businesses, especially locally owned ones.

Some are trying to get their feet back under them, especially restaurants that are just now able to offer on-site dining again, but only outdoors, while others are finding that they just won't be able to make it because of the prolonged period of little to no customers.

Unfortunately, earlier today we learned that a popular local restaurant right in the heart of Toms River will be closing for good.

Late Friday morning, Route 37's Social 37 took to Facebook to announce the news.

In the posting, they said:

“It is with deep regret that we announce Social 37 is permanently closed,” restaurant owners posted online. “We greatly appreciate all those who dined with us over the years, helping fulfill our mission of unique food and genuine hospitality. We’re extremely proud of our team and the passion they brought to work each and every day. We thank you for your understanding and bid you all a fond farewell. Be safe and until we meet again someday…eat, drink and be social!”

Social 37 opened almost exactly 5 years ago, in June of 2015, in the ShopRite Plaza right on Route 37.

The restaurant became popular for its local vibe and varied menu that featured everything from pizza to fresh seafood, plus big salads and a creative drink menu.

When the ShopRite Plaza in Toms River was totally redone on the north side of the 37 & Main Street interchange, a number of national chains took up residence there, including Panera, Smashburger, and Buffalo Wild Wings, but Social 37 thrived because of its local, accessible, and friendly vibe.
