A Football and Wedding Kind of Weekend
Just some random notes and thoughts heading into what will likely be the final “feels like summer” weekend.
We have reached the halfway point of the scheduled portion of the high school football season and our Jersey Mike’s Game of the Week takes us to Brick Memorial tonight where the streaking Mustangs host Central Regional in a game that will be broadcast live here on 92.7 WOBM and Beach Radio 1160/1310AM) beginning at 7 p.m.
After losing their opener Memorial has ripped off three straight wins led by running backs Tony Thorpe & Blaine Netterman and improving quarterback Tyler Sindel. The visiting Golden Eagles are 3-0 in Class A South with two of those wins coming in overtime and the other by one point. Junior running back Kavon Chambers is the main offensive threat for Central who is coming off a bye.
For a look at all the weekend games including who our “experts” think will win check out the Atlantic Physical Therapy Center Friday Football Picks on shoresportsnetwork.com. Our guest picker this week is former coach Bob Fiocco, a colorful character who guided Toms River North to their first state title.
I truly love ice hockey and have tremendous passion for the New York Rangers but the first week in October just seems too early for the season to start. The hockey season to me starts on New Year’s Day.
You might remember back in May I was the officiant for my nephew’s wedding in the Outer Banks (North Carolina) and I posted on Facebook shortly after that (with tongue in cheek) I was launching a new business venture, “Weddings by Williams.” Right away I got a message from Ed Brannagan, who I have known for years and is the General Manager of Martell’s Waters Edge in Bayville.
Ed’s daughter Bethanna was getting married on October 7 and he wanted to see if I was available. It turns out it’s a rare football-free Saturday so tomorrow at the Waters Edge I will perform the ceremony as Bethanna, who is an attorney marries Brick Township police officer John Scott.
I’m sure I’ll have a follow up on Monday if I don’t screw things up.
