Grief echoes through Belmar, where the second of two borough girls trapped in riptides last week lost her struggle for life late Monday. Emily Gonzalez, 12, had been on life support for several days. Her cousin, Mitzi Hernandez, like Emily a student in Belmar Elementary, also died. The beach was unguarded, with school still in session at the time.

Toms River code officials say that they'll inspect the marine equipment that triggered a Newark girl's death by electrocution during the weekend. Kayla Marie Alves Matos died after coming into contact with a metal boat lift rail Saturday night.

Busloads of taxpayers, parents and advocates for the Toms River Regional School District plan a demonstration at the State House in Trenton Thursday, protesting the proposed school funding formula revisions reached by New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Vin Prietos. The Toms River district would lose $3,000,000 each year, for at least the next five years, if Governor Christie approves it.

A head-on crash in the pouring rain in Manchester sends a Tuckerton man, his three preteen daughters, and a Whiting woman to hospitalization. Police said that Gabriel Bailey's car crossed into the oncoming side of Route 539 shortly after 6 PM Monday, into the path of the vehicle driven by Elizabeth Vanpelt. Police said everyone wore seat restraints.
